While things have progressively better, many still see science fiction as a genre that mainly attracts men. Because of this, science fiction science corridors are particularly sensitive to the transmission of anything that can move away female spectators. A great example of this is “La Granja”, a Battlestar Galactica The episode whose plot on women are forced to become “babies machines” caused the production team to care about losing their women’s audience.
To understand why the producers worried so much about “the farm”, it is possible that they need a quick summary of what this episode was about. While plot B involved Commander Adama and President Roslin competing for leadership, the plot to involved Starbuck that was linked to the resistance in Caprica before the Cylons captured it. He wakes up in one of the titular farms, which discovers that they are specialized prisons in which cylons use women to try to create hybrids men/machine.
In his own way, “La Granja” is one of the spooky Battlestar Galactica Episodes because it shows the depths of the depravation of which Cylons are capable and that there is really worse destiny than death for humanity surviving members. In addition, the Cylon Simon opens on how women who support children are a “precious product”, which echoes some of the most unpleasant real -life debates about the role that women should play in front of the deflin of the population. For all these reasons and more, the episode production team worried that this particular story would promote the spectators.
This data on “La Granja” leads us courtesy of Battlestar Galactica Podcast comment of the Ronald D. Moore showrunner for the episode. He revealed that part of his production team thought that the history of the episode was so dark that he would move away the women of the program. These groups affected production, and Moore revealed that only the episode of season 2 “Valley of Darkness” had such a controversial process.
Apart from the general points of the “La Granja” plot, the Battlestar Galactica The producers were also worried about the specific rhythms of stories, including the strong suggestion that Simon had given Starbuck a pelvic exam. Certainly fits into the gloomy story in which Starbuck destroys Cylon’s machinery and effectively condemn women who clarify that they prefer to be dead than “babies.” The producers forced forward with the episode, but they were here understandable that all this could move many of the spectators of this new program just when I needed as many people who saw as possible.
“The Farm” is a great episode of Battlestar GalacticaBut we cannot avoid thinking that this story of its problematic production is as fascinating as anything we saw on the screen. After all, the producers were right to worry … It is an episode that paints human women as special objectives of Cylon’s violence, everything without so little subtly attracting attention to the types of sexual aggression room is subject every day. It is a miracle that the episode came to air, but the very fact that Ronald Moore and the rest tok is just one more reason why BSG is the most loving science fiction program ever done.
