Tyron Smith signed the ceremonial contract that allowed the leading left Tackle withdrawing with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, and caused the radiant Berry Jerry Jones to declare: “Officer of a cowboy.”
Jones did not smile a year ago when the cowboys made the commercial decision to move from the anchor of the pulmonary time of their offensive line due to injuries, which led Smith to sign with the New York jets.
“It was like losing a family member when he went to the jets, it really was,” said Jones. “And I couldn’t talk to him, I couldn’t have a little talk. I find it hard to speak, picking up that phone when he left us. And so it was with great pleasure that he put that old Jones on the last day.”
Those 13 seasons with the Cowboys won easily, particularly because two months have passed since the six-time right guard of All-Pro, Zack Martin, Smith’s teammate for 10 years, retired after spending 11 or its seasons in Dallas.
“At the time I entered Dallas,” Smith said in a retirement ceremony attended by the 34 -year -old family and many former teammates and coaches, “I knew this was at home.”
Smith made eight professional bowls in a period of nine season that included his two all-prodes. But the injuries accumulated, and played a full season about his last nine years after being lost only one game in his first five seasons.
“After this, it fits the year already throughout the years of injuries and things like that, it was only felt that it was the right time to hang it,” said Smith. “I don’t want to be that guy in the line where I am fighting, and I want to be healthy for my children.”
At his best, Smith was perhaps the most dominant line in the history of the Famous franchise franchise, a massive 6 -foot and 320 pounds that seemed to leave a cartoon book. Hello knee, knee pads in its elbows and still had the athletic ability to maintain almost all pass pass from the blind side of the Tony Romo and Roof Prescott field marshal.
Smith was the first of the three offensive linens recruited in the first round by Dallas in a period of four years like the No. 9 General selection in 2011. The Travis Frederick Center was a late first round in 2013, followed by Martin a year later. Frederick retired after the 2019 season.
Smith played the right Tackle when he debuted as a 20 -year -old rookie outside California, making change to the left side of high profile a year later.
The Smith selection triggered a reconstruction of the offensive line of Dallas, which was among the best of the NFL in a few years.
“You can’t overcome the group we had,” said Smith, who made 161 beginnings with the cowboys before doing 10 with the jets. “We feel we were at the top of the world and unstoppable, and it is not a better feeling than that.”
Dallas had seven winning seasons and six appearances in the playoffs lasted Smith’s mandate, but could not overcome the divisional round. The cowboys have spent 29 seasons without reaching a NFC championship game since they won the fifth title of the Super Bowl franchise.
“It’s a tragedy we made a Super Bowl with you sitting in that left Tackle,” Jones said. “But that does not take away the fact of what you have achieved in the NFL. And I want to be the first to shake your hand when you enter that hall of fame (professional).”
