The Ministry of Steel is considering the formation of a separate vertical in Steel Authority of India LTD with an approach to mining operations to boost the production of iron mineral, according to an official.
A proposal of the Ministry is being discussed for the formation of a vertical mining company for better operations, said the senior government official. Sail is one of the largest integrated steel companies with captive iron ore blocks in India.
“The Ministry is discussing it with the company (Sail). The structure of the vertical is currently being discussed and then will be sent to navigate for more action course,” he said.
A separate vertical will focus on increasing the production of iron ore in line with the company’s expansion plans, said the official.
Sail aims to expand its general installed capacity to 35 million tons per year (MTPA) by 2030. Iron mineral is a key raw material used in the manufacture of steel through the high -oven route.
Sail under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel is the third largest iron producer in India with a network of 15 iron mineral mines in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The company also has four coal mines and three flow mines.
In 2024-25, the candle produced 33.78 mt or iron mineral, 0.59 mt or coque coal, 0.84 mt or thermal coal, 1.31 mt or limestone, and 0.40 mt or dolomite.
A consultation sent to Sail in search of his response remained unanswered.
