Queensland has presented two new priority areas to accelerate housing development in the state.

The state government announced two priority development areas (PDA), which together could deliver more than 10,000 new homes in the areas of Moreton Bay and Redland City.

A PDA is a designated land zone in Queensland designed to offer development projects, to meet the needs of the community and stimulate economic growth.

The last, the North Harbor PDA, aims to deliver around 3700 new homes in the next 15 years, with an initial launch of up to 200 houses in Burpengary East, located 50 km to the north or to the Brisbane CBD.

This PDA will be based on the existing development of North Harbor, which currently houses 3000 residents and is observed as one of the five important projects in the regional development strategy of the city of Moreton Bay 2020 – 2041.

According to the 2021 census data, Burpengary East had 2148 private well -being. Of those 1911, they were houses, 107 were semi-determined houses and 10 were listed as apartments.

While development has continued from the census, the new PDA could almost double housing options for its 6658 residents.

“The construction of independent apartments and homes will further boost the economy and provide another option for people looking to live in the bay of the city of Moreton,” said Bayor Peter Flannery of the city of Moreton.

“The development of a sports port on the site will unlock a new local marine industry, from the construction of boats to repairs, generating more qualified employment opportunities for our residents.”

The second PDA covers 890 hectares in the southern region of Thornlands, located 32 km east of the Brisbane CBD.

This proposal aims to unlock 8000 new houses, with an initial launch area that provides 900 homes, including 20% destined for affordable and social homes.

The area has 6779 homes, according to the 2021 census data, with 5593 of which are houses, 743 semi detailed houses and 63 as apartments.

With this PDA, 8000 new houses could be 19,263 from the residents of the area.

The PDA also proposes an investment of $ 4 million to improve the intersection of Springacre RD and Boundary RD to manage greater growth in the area.

The assistant minister of the Deputy Prime Minister and Assistant Minister of Planning, Housing and Best Regulation Rebecca Young said that the Government will work with the Council to plan the 20 -year PDA.

“Now is the time that all levels of government and the community meet and work towards the best possible plan of 20 years for southern Thornlands,” he said.

“The Crisafulli government is fulfilling our commitment to unlock, build and increase housing options throughout the state.”
