Volvo is introducing the first multi-adaptive seatbelt technology on the EX60 EV

Volvo has introduced a new seat belt technology that can customize the protection it provides in real time. The “Multi -Septative Safety Belt” system, as the car manufacturer calls it, uses the interior and exterior sensors data to change the protective configuration based on several factors. It can take into account the height, weight, body shape and seat of a person, as well as the direction and speed of the vehicle. The system can communicate all that information to the seat belt “in the open and close with an eye” so that it can optimize the protection for the passenger.

If the pin is on the largest side, for example, you will receive a higher belt load configuration to reduce the risk of head injury in case of a serious accident. For softer accidents, someone with a narrower frame will receive a lower belt load settings to avoid rib injuries. Volvo did not say specifically if the system also takes into account the position of a seat belt in women, since it does not always fit well into a woman’s chest. However, the automobile manufacturer explained that the system expands the number of load limitation profiles to 11. Load limiters control how much force a safety belt is applied in the body daring a blockade. In general, safety belts only have three limiting profiles, but Volvo expanding them to 11 means that the system can better optimize the protection obtained by a passenger.

Volvo used information from five decades of security research and a database or around 80,000 people involved in real -life accidents to design the new safety belt. The system was also created to incorporate improvements implemented through AR software updates, which the company expects to launch as it obtains more data and ideas.

“The first world multiple safety belt is another milestone for automotive security and a great example of how we take advantage of real -time data with the ambition to help save millions of more lives,” said Åsa Haglund, director of Volvo cars. “This marks an important update to the modern three -point safety belt, an invention of Volvo introduced in 1959, which is estimated to have saved around one million lives.”

Volvo Nils Bohlin engineer designed the modern three -point safety belt and made his patent available to other car manufacturers. The company did not say if it will be so generous with the adaptive multiple safety strap, but the new system will debut in the Median SUV Volvo Ex60 All-Electric Volvo Ex60 at some time next year.
